POSITION SUMMARY

The Principal Software Architect provides technical leadership and strategic direction for the software architecture of the AEOSx Digital Surgery product line and related technologies. This role is responsible for defining scalable, secure, and regulatory-compliant software architectures that support surgical visualization, imaging, robotics, and digital health capabilities while enabling long-term product innovation. As the organization's technical authority for software architecture, the Principal Software Architect partners cross-functionally with Engineering, Product Management, Quality, Regulatory, and R&D to drive architectural decisions, establish engineering standards, mentor technical teams, and align software platforms across the broader B. Braun organization.

 

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL HAVE THE CHANCE TO:

  • Define and own the software architecture for the AEOSx Digital Surgery product line, including surgical visualization, imaging, data management, cybersecurity, and robotic integration.
  • Establish software architecture standards, governance, and technology roadmaps that support scalability, maintainability, and future product innovation.
  • Drive software platform harmonization across the B. Braun organization through reuse of software components, development tools, and architectural best practices.
  • Define the software architecture and data strategies supporting cloud-based digital surgery applications, enabling scalable connectivity, data management, and future digital health capabilities.
  • Serve as the technical authority for software architecture, partnering with Systems Engineering, Product Management, Quality, Regulatory, and R&D to guide technical direction and product strategy.
  • Ensure software compliance with applicable medical device regulations and standards, including IEC 62304, ISO 13485, ISO 14971, FDA Design Controls, cybersecurity, and open-source software governance.
  • Lead architectural reviews, technical trade-off analyses, and system integration efforts to ensure robust, secure, and high-performing software solutions.
  • Lead the definition, documentation, and compliance efforts for open-source and other third-party software components used within the medical devices.
  • Mentor software engineers and provide architectural guidance throughout the software development lifecycle, promoting engineering excellence and reusable design.
  • Collaborate with Software Engineers and R&D Scientists to define and prioritize advanced technology initiatives and long-term product roadmap capabilities.

 

 

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • 12+ years of related HW/SW/System experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 10+ years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 8+ years of experience; or equivalent experience, including significant experience leading software architecture efforts.
  • Strong Communication skills; ability to interpret professional journals, technical procedures, government regulations, etc.
  • Proficiency within Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook or equivalent.
  • Experienced programming with C++ and Object Oriented design
  • Experience developing software for regulated medical devices in accordance with IEC 62304, FDA Design Controls, ISO 13485, and related standards.
  • Experience with version control systems (eg. Git)
  • Knowledgeable of standard programming concepts, best-practices, and procedures
  • Working knowledge of Scrum or other Agile development methodologies
