Senior ERP Backend Engineer - Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain Management / ERP Platform

1. Role Purpose

The Senior ERP Backend Engineer will design, build, extend, integrate, and support backend components for the Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain Management ERP platform. The role requires hands-on engineering capability in X++, extension-based customization, ERP integrations, reporting, performance optimization, and application lifecycle management. The position is intended for a developer who can translate functional requirements into reliable technical solutions while protecting upgradeability, stability, security, and maintainability of the ERP template.

Core expectation: This is not a generic backend developer role. The successful candidate must be a Dynamics 365 ERP technical specialist who can build APIs, reports, integrations, extensions, and performance-safe customizations within Microsoft ERP best practices.

2. Key Responsibilities

2.1 ERP Backend Development & Extensions

  • Design and develop Dynamics 365 FSCM extensions using X++ and standard extension patterns; avoid overlayering unless explicitly justified and approved.
  • Customize forms, tables, data entities, classes, workflows, business events, batch jobs, and extensions to meet approved business requirements.
  • Develop clean, reusable, testable code that follows naming conventions, version control discipline, and Microsoft development standards.
  • Prepare technical specifications from functional designs and document assumptions, dependencies, risks, and deployment steps.

2.2 API, Integration & Interface Development

  • Design, build, and maintain integrations using OData, REST APIs, Data Management Framework entities, business events, custom services, and batch-based integration patterns.
  • Support Dual-write / Dataverse integration where required, including mapping awareness, error monitoring, and coordination with Power Platform or CRM teams.
  • Integrate ERP with middleware and external systems such as MuleSoft, SAP, payment platforms, portals, mobile apps, reporting platforms, or third-party operational systems.
  • Implement error handling, retry logic, logging, reconciliation, and monitoring approaches for reliable data exchange.

2.3 Reporting & Data Extraction

  • Design and develop operational, statutory, and management reports using SSRS, electronic reporting, financial reports, data entities, and Power BI-ready datasets where applicable.
  • Optimize report queries, joins, indexes, filters, and batch generation processes to reduce performance impact on production operations.
  • Support data extraction and reconciliation for migration, analytics, audit, and business validation activities.

2.4 Performance, Upgradeability & Quality

  • Analyze and resolve performance bottlenecks in code, queries, integrations, batch jobs, reports, and customizations.
  • Ensure all development is compatible with Microsoft update cycles and minimizes regression risk during platform upgrades.
  • Perform unit testing, peer code reviews, technical impact assessment, and release readiness checks before deployment.
  • Troubleshoot production issues, root-cause defects, and provide corrective actions with clear documentation.

2.5 DevOps, Release & Environment Management

  • Use Azure DevOps for work items, branches, pull requests, build pipelines, release pipelines, version control, and deployment coordination.
  • Support packaging, build validation, deployment notes, release approvals, rollback planning, and separation of DEV, TEST, UAT, and PROD changes.
  • Collaborate with Scrum Master, Cloud / DevOps Engineer, QA Engineer, Functional Consultants, Product Owner, and Solution Architect to deliver sprint commitments.

2.6 ERP Configuration Support

  • Support module setup and parameterization where technical configuration is required, especially for Finance, Procurement, Inventory, Warehousing, Sales, Supply Chain, manufacturing, tax, integrations, and security-related configurations.
  • Advise on when to configure standard functionality, when to use extension development, and when to defer or redesign a requested customization.

3. Required Technical Skills

Dynamics 365 FSCM / Finance & Operations Development

  • Strong hands-on X++ development experience in Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations / Finance & Supply Chain Management.
  • Good understanding of ERP data models, entities, business processes, and transaction flows across Finance and Supply Chain modules.
  • Experience with extension-based customization, event handlers, Chain of Command, data entities, services, batch framework, security roles, and deployment packages.

Integration Engineering

  • Strong experience designing and consuming OData and REST APIs.
  • Experience with Data Management Framework, custom services, business events, and batch integration patterns.
  • Working knowledge of Dual-write, Dataverse integration concepts, and Power Platform integration patterns is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with middleware / integration layers such as MuleSoft, Azure Integration Services, Logic Apps, Service Bus, or comparable platforms is an advantage.

Reporting & Data

  • Experience developing SSRS reports for Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations.
  • Ability to write efficient queries and support data extraction for operational reporting, reconciliation, and analytics.
  • Power BI dataset or data model experience is an advantage.

DevOps & Engineering Discipline

  • Practical Azure DevOps experience: repositories, branches, pull requests, work items, build and release pipelines.
  • Understanding of CI/CD, environment promotion, source control discipline, code review, and release documentation.
  • Ability to prepare technical specifications, deployment notes, test evidence, and support handover documentation.

Performance, Security & Maintainability

  • Ability to diagnose and optimize slow queries, batch jobs, reports, and integrations.
  • Understanding of security roles, duties, privileges, segregation of duties impact, and least-privilege design.
  • Strong awareness of upgrade compatibility, regression risk, and Microsoft ERP development lifecycle constraints.

4. Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 5–8 years of backend / ERP development experience, including at least 3 years of hands-on Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations or Dynamics 365 FSCM technical development.
  • Proven delivery of ERP integrations, customizations, reports, and production support in a multi-module ERP environment.
  • Experience working in agile delivery teams using Azure DevOps or similar tooling.

5. Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Preferred: Microsoft Certified Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations Apps Developer Associate, or equivalent demonstrable experience.
  • Preferred: Azure Developer / Azure Fundamentals / Power Platform Fundamentals certifications, where relevant.

6. Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Experience in multi-company, multi-country, or template-based ERP rollout environments is highly desirable.
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 upgrade or migration to Dynamics 365 is an advantage.
  • Power Platform experience: Power Apps, Power Automate, Dataverse, custom connectors, and governance awareness.
  • Azure services used for integration and operations: Logic Apps, Service Bus, Functions, Key Vault, Application Insights, API Management, and storage services.
  • Knowledge of electronic reporting, tax localization, statutory integrations, or industry-specific operational systems.

7. Soft Skills & Working Style

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability with the ability to isolate technical issues quickly.
  • Clear communication with functional consultants, business process owners, architects, QA, DevOps, and management stakeholders.
  • Ability to challenge unnecessary customization and recommend standard, maintainable alternatives.
  • Ownership mindset, documentation discipline, and ability to work independently in a cloud-first agile environment.
  • Comfortable supporting urgent production issues while maintaining release discipline and auditability.
